Golf is easily one of the most popular popular sports in Australia. In fact, about 10% of Aussies (around 1.3 million) play golf! It’s no surprise that golf events in Australia are quite common. With 1,800 golf courses in the country, there’s room for everyone to play.

One of the upcoming golf events in Australia this month is the RACV Ladies Masters, also known as the Australian Ladies Masters. If you’re an Australian golfer following this event – or if you’re new to the scene and need some context – here’s a little background on the tournament itself.

RACV Ladies Masters History

Believe it or not, the earliest record of golf as a sport in Australia dates back to 1839! While the Ladies Masters isn’t that old, it has quite a rich history of its own.

It’s one of the better known and richest Australian Golf events, and has been running since 1990. It started out as a 54-hole stroke play event that expanded to 72 holes in 1994. In 2001, it was co-sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour, and is now one of the leading tournaments of the APLG Tour.

The 2015 champion was Su-Hyun Oh, who won the Volvik RACV Ladies Masters only on her second match as a professional golf player. Before that, she was first in the World Amateur Golf ranking back in 2013. It’s a feat that’s well-deserved, as Su-Hyun Oh started playing golf at the age of nine. Then at 12 years old, she was the youngest player to ever qualify for the Women’s Australian Open!
